Atrocities continue

Today Sudan’s Arabic-nomadic militia’s of the Janjaweed (“mounted devils”) continue to expel, rape, maim and kill civilians in the western region of Darfur with active support of the Sudan government since March 2003. They have already murdered over 300,000 civilians.

The main rebel movement, the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA, also called the Sudan Liberation Movement, SLM) has lacked the means to protect the civilians of their own tribes, let alone those of others.

During 2005 and this year the SLA has effectively disintegrated into different factions that claim the same name, weakening even further its fighting power and capability to defend the defenceless.

Our October 2005 report describes the background, causes and the state and non-state belligerents in Darfur. For a better understanding of this conflict we refer to the report and the main sources we have consulted for it.
